Abhyanga: An Ancient Postpartum Ritual
Abhyanga: An Ancient Postpartum Ritual for Deep Restoration
There is a window after birth that many traditional cultures honor deeply.
In Ayurveda, the first 40 days postpartum are considered a sacred and vulnerable time for a mother’s body, mind, and spirit. After carrying a baby for nine months, your womb space—once full of life—is suddenly empty. Your body has expanded, opened, released, and transformed in extraordinary ways.
This transition is powerful, but it can also be destabilizing.
One of the most beautiful ways traditional medicine supports this time is through Abhyanga, a warm oil massage rooted in Ayurvedic healing.
I’m honored to now offer this practice to my clients as part of postpartum care through Soulful & Nourished.
I trained in this work with Caitlin Arce of Embody the Temple Healing Arts in Boulder, and I practice within a lineage that emphasizes personal integrity, respect for tradition, and deep reverence for postpartum healing.
This is not simply a massage.
It is a restorative ritual that honors your transformation into motherhood.
What is Abhyanga?
Abhyanga is a slow, rhythmic, full-body oil massage traditionally practiced in Ayurveda to nourish the body and calm the nervous system.
During postpartum, this practice specifically focuses on balancing the Vata dosha—the energetic principle associated with air, movement, and change.
Birth is considered a Vata-aggravating event.
Your body has gone through tremendous movement and energetic output to bring your baby earth side.
Abhyanga helps restore balance by bringing warmth, heaviness, and grounding energy back into the body.
The massage uses long, flowing strokes with warm oil, applied with the full hands to create a deeply nurturing and stabilizing experience.
It is slow.
Intentional.
And incredibly calming.

Physical Benefits
This practice offers powerful support for the physical healing that happens after birth.
Improves circulation and lymphatic drainage
Supporting blood flow and lymph movement helps your body repair tissues and eliminate waste from the healing process.
Relieves postpartum aches and pains
Sore muscles, stiff joints, and body tension from pregnancy and labor can be gently soothed through warm oil and rhythmic massage.
Supports hormonal balance
Improved lymphatic flow supports the body as it recalibrates hormones after birth.
Hydrates and nourishes the skin
Warm oil deeply moisturizes stretched skin and supports elasticity.
Reduces inflammation and promotes healing
Abhyanga may support recovery of scars, including cesarean birth scars, by improving circulation and nourishing tissues.
Improves joint health
After pregnancy, joints can feel unstable or sore. The oil and massage help lubricate and support the body’s connective tissues.
Emotional + Nervous System Benefits
Postpartum is not only physical—it is deeply emotional.
Abhyanga offers a powerful way to support the nervous system during this tender time.
The long, rhythmic strokes and warm oil create a grounding, calming effect that signals safety to the body.
Many mothers experience:
• Reduced stress and anxiety
• Deeper relaxation
• Better sleep
• A feeling of being cared for and held
This massage also supports the release of oxytocin, often called the love hormone.
Oxytocin plays an important role in:
• emotional bonding with baby
• breastfeeding support
• nervous system regulation
• overall feelings of wellbeing
After birth, oxytocin levels can fluctuate dramatically. Practices that gently increase it can be incredibly supportive.
Energetic Healing After Birth
Energetically, birth requires enormous output.
Many mothers describe the feeling of going “out into the ethers” to bring their baby earth side.
Abhyanga helps bring your energy back down into the body.
The warmth, oil, and slow touch reconnect you to your physical self and the grounding energy of the earth.
This is why the practice is traditionally recommended during the first 40 days postpartum, when Vata is most elevated.
The Oils Used
Traditionally, sesame oil is used in Abhyanga massage.
Sesame oil is:
• warming
• heavy and nourishing
• deeply penetrating to tissues
• balancing for Vata energy
For some clients, the oil may also be infused with supportive herbs or additional oils depending on what your body needs.
